In most cases, no one knows what causes high blood pressure, but we do know that certain foods can increase or lower blood pressure. Foods high in fat, salt, and calories can increase your blood pressure. This includes butter, margarine, regular salad dressings, fatty meats, whole milk dairy products, fried foods, salted snacks, canned soups, fast foods, and deli meats. Also, drinking more than a moderate amount of alcohol–generally one drink a day for women, or two a day for men–can raise blood pressure and also reduce the effectiveness of blood pressure medications. To help control your blood pressure, you should be eating a healthy diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products and cuts back on saturated fat and cholesterol.
